PAST EVENTS 2021

NOVEMBER 2021
State Park's Evening Camp Out: Friday the 18th 6-8PM a fireside chat about fishing and conservation at Rio de Los Angeles State Park.
OCTOBER 2021
SCTU FISH TRIP IS ON!
Where: Mono Hot Springs Resort on the San Joaquin
When: October 14th to 16th, 2021
Contact: Robert Blankenfish at southcoasttu@gmail.com

Description: It’s wild country on the western side of the Sierras, about 4 easy hours’ drive to Fresno then 2 back and forth hours to the resort. We’ve reserved the tent camps at the resort but understand this is a Sierra resort – not fancy but comfortable beds to sleep in, showers and toilets. Also, hot springs are there but nudity is not allowed, insert your own joke here. The resort and accommodations can be viewed at the Mono hot springs website.

Our reservations at the resort begin Thursday night, October 14th. You can travel up and spend Thursday night, then fish on your own Friday. Saturday and Sunday is guided fishing, so if you can’t make it up until Friday that’s OK too. The cost breaks down to $395 for the fishing and $75 for the tent camping whenever you get there. We also have a few beds reserved for Sunday night if you want to stay on the mountain after fishing that day, avoiding the long drive on tired legs. First come first served.

You’ll bring your camping stuff and set up camp to cook your grub, sleep, and hang out, with the guides to help understand the area and put you into fish. The resort also has a store and restaurant so if you want to forget cooking a night or two there’s that option. Beginners and experts alike are welcome, teamed up with guides to our abilities. The cost is $470 total for the weekend – guiding and resort camping included - and should open your eyes to whole new opportunities not far from home! More info, and video of the brown trout running, at the wild trout camp link.

PAST EVENTS 2020

March 2020
Fish Outing –  - CANCELLED
Jimbo sent out a link on his lariverflyfishing.com blog about an upcoming trip put together by Jacob Gorman at the Orvis shop in Pasadena. It sounds like a great time so I wanted to dial in the other TU’ers in the area to see who else might be interested. Jim and I are definitely going.

Picture
The trip includes two days of guided fishing on the Upper Kings River, March 28 and 29 , 2020. The exact location is available only to those who sign up – right? – but there’s supposed to be a hatch of March brown mayflies at that time to complement a couple nights camping. It’s wild country on the western side of the Sierras, about 5 hours drive from LA, and not to be missed by So Cal trout chasers. I’ve been up there on several trips years ago and March is the perfect time to see some poppies, find some unexpected solitude, and fish a wild, undammed section of the western Sierras. I found the fish to be healthy and feisty, the weather to be spring pleasant at about 1000 foot elevation, and the crowds non- existent.

The trip is wade fishing along the Kings with camping out at night. You’ll bring your camping stuff and set up camp to cook your grub, sleep, and hang out, with Jimmy Morales providing the guides to help understand the river and put you into fish. Jimmy says that beginners and experts alike are welcome and he’ll team us up with guides to our abilities. The cost is $395 for the weekend and should open your eyes to whole new opportunities not far from home! More info at SierraFlyfisher.com: click on Trips, then Kings River.

Call Jimmy direct to sign up or with specific questions at 559.367.7467. Also please let me know by email if you’re coming, SouthCoastTU@gmail.com. We can coordinate the feedbag if we get a good crew of people and pick up plenty of firewood.

LA River State Park Partners the 3rd Annual Community Celebration

Trout Unlimited – South Coast Chapter was on hand to celebrate with Los Angeles River State Park Partners the 3rd Annual Community Celebration at the Los Angeles State Historic Park. Students from Albion Street, Castelar Street, Ann Street and Solano Avenue Elementary Schools performed holiday songs and participated in Arts & Crafts throughout the morning. Trout Unlimited - South Coast Chapter President Ban Luu and Vice-President William Preston Bowling helped teach students and their parents the art of casting a spinning rod in the Park. If your bobber landed in the Hula-Hoop circle you went home with a mini tackle box. The parents and children were excited to snap up the sought after rod & reel combo donated to a raffle from our chapter. TU member Luis Rincon pulled double duty helping kids as he is also a State Park employee and works as their Interpretive Specialist. Thanks to Sean Woods (California State Parks Superintendent the Los Angeles Sector) for allowing our chapter this opportunity to engage in the public we serve and look forward to doing this again in late 2020!
